Geroprotective and anti-aging effects of the extract and chemical compounds of desert ginseng (Cistanche deserticola Y.C. Ma)

An analysis of the publications presented in the review indicates that the extract of the desert cistanche (Cistanche deserticola Y.C. Ma) or its individual components (polysaccharides, phenylethanoid glycosides and others) can increase the lifespan of laboratory animals, activate telomerase, and have an antioxidant and anti-osteoclastogenic effect. Various neuroprotective effects (improvement of memory and learning ability, protection of dopaminergic neurons and others) are of interest for the prevention and treatment of syndromes associated with senile degradation of the nervous system - Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The inhibition of tyrosinase activity by the extract of this plant makes it promising for the purposes of whitening and skin rejuvenation. The extract also significantly improves the visual abilities of rats, reducing the severity of the developed signs of age-related cataracts.
